U13s Grove Plate

Under 13s win Plate at Abingdon

The Under 13s won the Plate Competition at the Abingdon Youth Tournament on 17th May. The team finished third in their group, losing narrowly to eventual winners Reading Allstars. In the subsequent Plate Competition they powered past Carterton 3-0 with a hat trick from Sean Cooper, and were then too good for Didcot Casuals. Goals from Sean Cooper and Luke Ulyatt secured a 2-0 victory.

Under 13s celebrate double success at Grove 6s

There was a dual triumph for Wantage Concords Under 13s at the Grove 6 a side tournament. The A team was runner up in the main competition whilst the B team reached the final of the plate.

The A team played some fine football and were unlucky to finish second in their group, losing narrowly against Quarry in a game they could have won, and growing in confidence as the competition progressed. In the knockout stage they overcame and Marston to reach the final. The latter proved to be a tense affair against a strong Didcot side. Wantage took an early lead but Didcot hit back before half time. Concords had the better chances in the second half but did not convert them, and the match was settled with Didcot scoring the winner agonisingly close to the end of extra time.

The B team made a slow start, taking only one point from their first four games. But they turned the tide with victories in their final two games as they suddenly found their scoring boots. After scraping through the quarter final after a tense penalty shootout against Oxford Blackbirds they were then too good for xxx in the semis, and were a different team from the one which had begun the competition. Unfortunately in the final the team came up against a strong Radley side and went down 2-0, but the boys can be proud of their improvement and never say die attitude over the day.
